Speed and the Basset Hound don’t typically go hand in hand, but Angelique, a 4-year-old, 34-pounder, has defied expectations at the American Kennel Club’s Fastest Dogs USA competition in Orlando, Florida.
Owners Dan and Laure Niles, of Columbus, Ohio, found solace and inspiration in Angelique’s participation in the Fast CAT competition, especially after Dan’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis just weeks before the event.
Despite health concerns, Dan’s surgeon gave him the go-ahead to travel to Orlando, where Angelique exceeded expectations and made it to the finals in the Speed of the Breed category.
Angelique’s love for chasing things was evident early on, and her participation in Fast CAT was a natural fit for her energetic personality. Regular walks and playtime with other dogs helped keep her in top condition for competition.
Angelique’s success continued into Fastest Dogs USA 2022, where she competed among other fast breeds and previous winners. Her speed and agility never fail to impress spectators, earning her the nickname “the sleek Angelique.”
Angelique’s journey in competitive dog sports has been a source of comfort and motivation for the Niles family, especially during difficult times. Though Dan Niles passed away in 2021, his pride in Angelique’s accomplishments lives on through Laure Niles and their shared love for Basset Hounds.
A Basset with a Burst of Energy
Angelique’s passion for chasing things and her natural athleticism made her a perfect candidate for Fast CAT competitions. Regular exercise and playtime helped keep her in prime condition for races.
