The foundation of the canine genome was established using a boxer as the base. With advancements in technology and affordability, there is potential to generate more canine genomes to enhance our understanding. The AKC DNA Program’s Genetic Diversity Project aims to create a comprehensive database of canine genomic information. This initiative will involve sequencing the whole genomes of 4000 dogs from all AKC-recognized breeds, representing the genetic diversity within these breeds.

Genetic tests rely heavily on breed-specific data, and caution should be exercised when extrapolating test results to different breeds or even subgroups within the same breed. While there is a rapid expansion of public genomic sequences of dogs, not all breeds are equally represented. For more common breeds, the available sequences may not capture the full genetic diversity present within the breed.

Traditionally, when breeders encounter health concerns within their breed, researchers collect samples over a period of one to two years. This is followed by DNA sequencing and bioinformatics, which may lead to a publication several years later. The Genetic Diversity Project aims to provide readily available data, eliminating the delays in sample collection, sequencing, and allowing researchers to focus on validation. Validation is a crucial step where researchers confirm the presence of a novel genetic variant in a separate group of dogs.

Sharing of data will be facilitated through academic data grants, similar to the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Key goals of the AKC Genetic Diversity Project include expediting research projects, enhancing genetic counseling, advancing breed health research, and evaluating genetic diversity for breed preservation.

Interested individuals and clubs are invited to participate in the project by requesting a Research DNA Kit. This involves submitting 6 swabs per dog for DNA analysis. Research kits and submission forms will be provided for mailing back to AKC DNA Operations.

To participate or learn more, individuals can complete a survey on the AKC DNA website. National specialty events are recommended for collecting DNA samples from a large number of dogs simultaneously.

Additionally, the project aims to include Foundation Stock Service® and other rare breeds in the study.

It is important to note that these research kits are solely for research purposes and do not fulfill registration requirements. For AKC DNA Kits for registration purposes, they can be purchased here.
