Queen Elizabeth II’s love for animals began with her first Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Susan, gifted to her on her 18th birthday in 1944. Over the years, she owned more than 30 Pems and was a dedicated breeder until 2015, choosing not to leave any young dogs behind after her passing.

“This devoted breeder and owner has been the patron of The Kennel Club for 70 years, and her passion for the breed has influenced responsible owners on both sides of the pond,” said Dennis Sprung, CEO of the American Kennel Club.

Upon her passing on September 8, 2022, the Royal Family rushed to be by her side. Queen Elizabeth II is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her beloved dogs Muick, Sandy, Candy, and Lissy. The responsibility of caring for the dogs now falls to the family members.

Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, and his former wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, will take care of the two Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Muick and Sandy, at the Royal Lodge in Windsor. Prince William assured that the dogs will be well looked after and have a good home.

Although Muick and Sandy were seen during the Queen’s funeral procession, there has been no announcement yet regarding the care of the mixed-breed and Cocker Spaniel.

Queen Elizabeth II was actively involved in the feeding and care of her dogs, often taking them for walks with the help of her staff. Her dogs were fed from silver and porcelain bowls and were well-loved by her. It is expected that her staff will continue to care for them in the future.

Regardless of who takes on the responsibility of caring for her remaining dogs, it is hoped that Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy as an animal lover and Pembroke Welsh Corgi enthusiast will live on through them.

“I am confident that Her Majesty has made arrangements for the well-being of her beloved Pembrokes within the family,” said Dennis Sprung.
